Part-time Positions:
Special Law Enforcement Officer 1
Qualifications:
a. Is a citizen of the United States
b. Is a resident of the State of New Jersey [N.J.S.A. 40A:14-122.8]
d. Is able to read, write and speak the English language well and intelligently;
e. Is of good moral character, and
Duties:
Officers of this class are authorized to perform routine traffic detail, spectator control and similar duties. They shall have the power to issue summonses for disorderly persons and petty disorderly persons offenses, violations of municipal ordinances and violations of Title 39 of the Revised Statutes. The use of a firearm by an officer of this category shall be strictly prohibited and no Class I officer shall be assigned any duties which may require the carrying or use of a firearm. There may be appointed such number of Class I special law enforcement officers as may be required.
Special Law Enforcement Officer II
Qualifications:
a. Is a citizen of the United States
b. Is a resident of the State of New Jersey [N.J.S.A. 40A:14-122.8]
d. Is able to read, write and speak the English language well and intelligently;
e. Is of good moral character, and
Duties:
Officers of this class shall be authorized to exercise full powers and duties similar to those of a permanent, regularly appointed full-time police officer. The use of a firearm by an officer of this class may be authorized only after the officer has been fully certified as successfully completing training as prescribed by the New Jersey Police Training Commission. The number of Class II special law enforcement officers shall not exceed 25% of the total number of regular police officers.
Crossing Guard
Qualifications:
- Is a citizen of the United States.
- Is a resident of the State of New Jersey.
- Is sound in body and of good health.
- Is at least 18 years of age.
- Is of good moral character.
- Has not been convicted of any criminal offense involving moral turpitude.
- Must successfully pass a criminal history and background check.
- Must successfully pass a hearing test and medical physical.
Duties:
- Direct and escort pedestrians, particularly elementary, middle, and high school students, across streets, stopping traffic as necessary.
- Alert drivers about the presence of children.
- Monitor traffic flow to locate safe gaps through which pedestrians can cross streets.
- Model appropriate street skills and behaviors for young children.
